FWIW I agree 100%. As someone who needed a month of car rentals I got to “demo” both the Geo Metro, the Ford Aspire and the Dodge Neon. The Neon was by far the best car.

We have had multiple Diahatsu, Suzuki, Kia and Hyundai offerings here.  We still have < 10K Mitsubishi cars, albeit only as rental fleet sales. I'd like to be in your cheap and cheerful parade but when quick and fun costs roughly the same due to the magic of Craigslist I am no longer on board

While I’ll grant you those it also had a near perfect Crazy Taxi port and wheel controller, heck it had everything. Fishing pole, 2 joystick robot fighting controller, whatever that weird seaman mic was, keyboard, maracas, etc. Way to end on a high note Sega.

Counterpoint: 80s and 90s era crap-cans were also objectively terrible. Hyundai Excel and Geo Metro to name two off the top of my head. The 1970s weren’t great but so long as you were down with 10mpg significant fun could still be had.

There is a solution, universal basic income and/or fully subsidized education. That said it’s not a great solution and we are not going to get it anytime soon. If you want to be reeducated on the government’s dime these days your best bet is to dust off your Koran and emigrate to China.
