Random % mechanic. Being in zone + stats = %chance of catch, % increases the longer you stay in zone, or affect size speed of success reticule. If your argument is that pressing catch after someone else presses throw is too difficult of a game mechanic.

Easy solution - there is someone playing as coach. The receiving zone is detailed on the field, visible only to the team.
