People are used to the run and gun with no realism. Obviously the author is. It also works well for people that need a quick fix or don't have a group to play with. I'd say that's the majority of players. If it wasn't, every game would be more like Arma. 

I think the solution is less to drive something that looks like something your passengers would drive, and more to drive something a cool pilot dude would fly. Any of the following, gently used, come in below your price point.

NP all day long - these are some fairly capable all-road/off-road vehicles. Not in the rock-crawling sense, but in the real world sense. Further, it has a ridiculous safety profile which has some value.

Very few people are selling it for MSRP. Since Amazon has PS4 and XBO for $17(-) it may be cheaper to just buy the game than renting it. I would think Redbox and other services already phased it out anyway.

We’ve had growth-systems for games for decades. Expansion packs and subscription models were always considered ethical pricing structures, provided the quality of the content matched the price.
