I don’t think it’s a lack of effort: the Vision concept wasn’t bad, so they’re clearly capable of more. Someone just decided that bland-as-possible was a good thing (probably the same person who picked the new name).

I used to have a book that tracked Sony’s designs over the decades and they were amazingly futuristic for the time. They rivaled Apple in terms of simplicity of form and complexity of detail.
