In my experience, it’s enough to just have corrosion from the battery present, combined with the ground located near the battery to cause problems. The electrical activity across the dirt/corrosion can exacerbate rust formation. It doesn’t have to be a leaky battery. This the same reason why salt covered dirty cars…
