EVs do NOT have CVTs, to my knowledge. You’re thinking of hybrids. An EV usually needs a single direct drive gear ratio (that does require “gears” and even a differential) unless it is going for a land speed record. Tesla “D” models have two motors, each with a different ratio, to provide better efficiency.

Some electric road cars have gearboxes, others don’t. It depends on the electric motor’s power and operating speed range. The faster you want to go, the more likely it is to require a gearbox simply because the electric motor can’t put out enough power or rotate as fast as the rest of the parts have to rotate.

In general after AC motors achieve their rated speed, any additional speed will cause a drop in torque. By using a second gear electric cars can achieve a higher topspeed.
