Right - a respect for historical significance does not equal nostalgic wankery. Everything about this makes me mad.

Honestly that's probably the most apt comparison here. A spoiled little shit acting like a spoiled little shit.

It's a daring and provoking gambit, to be sure, but I think I'm just brave enough to introduce this idea to the world and see what the world does with it.

But they're things that have an agreed upon value to some people. The only things that have intrinsic value to peope are food and clothing and shelter and medicine; everything else is just sort of worth what people decide it's worth. At the end of the day, he could have chosen to do something with these things that

This legit pisses me off. Setting aside everything else about the aesthetic value of doing this, he could have sold this stuff off and give the proceeds to an organization who could have used it. This is pretty inexcusable to me. He may as well have been literally burning money.

It's funny - I'm not a fan of any of those things, but I do love this album.

Understandable. I was a weekly customer there for many years, and I think I JUST missed you working there. Left NYC in May.

Everyone knows that what Jordo feels about Forbidden Planet is "bleh". But what this post pre-supposes is … maybe not "bleh"?

I have a weird, irrational grudge against this comic for what I'm probably erroneously perceiveing as its role in the slowdown in the release of new issues of Rocket Girl.

Don't know how much difference it would mean in the commute, but I've always been partial to Forbidden Planet over Midtown. Decent discount if you set up a pull list, friendly staff, and as a bonus, it's right next door to The Strand. I'm missing NYC right now…

Someone pointed out that it's sort of a nod to the design of the original Alien poster with the egg against black space. The head here is kinda egg shaped. Fairly subtle, but I'm sure it's intentional.

Jesus. Thanks - I guess.

This! Exactly this! This morning, I was trying to find a decent list of celebrity deaths in 2016, since I've basically lost track, and all I could find were Flash slideshows, or the Wikipedia entry, which is hundreds of names long and includes actual important people like Lithuanian scientists and whatnot in

Wilco would be high on my list as well at this point.

Fun fact! My handle here is a misunderstanding of a Mifune legend. Lucas allegedly considered him for Obi-Wan Kenobi originally, but for a variety of reasons, that didn't work out. Back in the pre-internet days, I somehow heard this story mangled around a bit to be that Lucas originally wanted him to play Han Solo.

Mills and Stipe, I'd say. The two of them singing together is what defines R.E.M. as being R.E.M. for me. Everything else changes over the years but there's always that as bedrock.

Right - they sounded a lot of different ways over the years, but somehow they always sounded like R.E.M.

Also - setting aside the quality of the music, the model that they set for moving from an indie label to the majors without fundamentally changing who they were or wanted to be was incredibly important in paving the way for the "alternative" explosion.

I mean who can really say, but for my money, they'd be right up there in the running. Extensive catalogue, only a few (really for me only one) clunkers, and a stretch of excellence that ran for over 10 years. They're in rare company, at any rate.

Well it DOES require several sets of hands, so having a few sister-wives on hand is a distinct advantage.
