What about when wins and performance do matter? High school varsity and college levels for example.

I look at it as a swing up vs swing down situation. If you’re on varsity and swing down to play against JV teams that’s shitty. If you’re on JV and swing up to play varsity that’s fine. Men’s teams being varsity and women’s being JV makes it pretty simple to understand.

True, winning isn’t the most important thing. It’s a lot more fun than losing though. I think I realized this playing T-ball when I was 4.

My brother wrestled in a similar situation and got some wins by default if the other schools didn’t have anyone in the lowest weight class. It was his and your choice to participate and compete with a disadvantage. There’s a difference between that and choosing to compete with an advantage.
