Kelis is not the first artist that has complained about Beyonce helping herself to their art. In this case though I don’t think Kelis has much of a leg to stand on since Pharrell and Chad Hugo own the rights of the song

Rist herself didn’t accuse her. IIRC, she considered it an homage and appreciated it brought attention from a whole bunch of people who otherwise wouldn’t have been exposed to her work.
The Neptunes are the only writers credited on the original track and so they are the only writers credited on Beyoncé’s track.
Kelis has had beef with the Neptunes for a long time. They are credited as sole writers on “Milkshake,” not her, and so they are also credited on Beyoncé’s track, not her.
*(As an aside: I’m not sure “trying to make me pay the literal millions I owe in taxes” is really rises to the level of “rights violation” when you are a world-renowned singer.)*
It seems to me that Kelis is (or should be) actually mad that she didn’t fight to be credited as a writer on that song. That may or may not be a legit grievance; none of us was in the studio when that song came together.
it’s a fucking great album. I’ve been listening all day and it keeps getting better each listen. Thique, Heated, Plastic Off the Sofa and Virgo’s Groove are solid hits. The album is littered with both love and critiques of America, and it’s just smooth fun that is a celebration of the queer underground and disco.
Yeah, however I am still torn here. Kelis’ voice is not in Beyonce’s track as far as I can hear, she has zero songwriting credits on the original track so is not necessarily owed any more than anyone else involved in making it, and there would have been many others. Also, I generally think Kelis seems pretty cool.
honestly it’s also so powerful that she’s reclaiming Black ballroom culture that Gaga and Madonna have borrowed so much from, and bringing these lost AID related legacies back to life through a Black voice. She truly does feel unrivalled in todays pop star landscape, and this album just feels so big, so necessary and…
It’s the same sort of mentality that allows them to publish endless articles about “eating the rich” but then praise someone like Serena Williams for being a billionaire when she also happens to be married to a the super rich founder of Reddit, one of the most toxic sites on the internet.
If her voice isn’t sampled, and the original writers of the track are credited... I see no issue.
I’m totally fine with the fact that so many people draw inspiration and strength from the stories in it and even though I don’t believe them, I try not to go after others who aren’t doing anything wrong with the beliefs. But for almost its entire existence, the words in the book have been used to justify and excuse…
Genuinely nice people have no reason to effect a nicey-nice facade.
The actual-nice Christians never seem to feel the need to show off how Christian they are. Which seems to be usually true of religious opinions generally.
What about Christiane F.? I must have reread that a million times back in the day.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas did it for me.
the definition of evangelical christian
Bure is a nasty bitch masquerading as a nicey-nice Christian.
This makes me SO FUCKING HAPPY.
Thanks for posting this. Joni Mitchell is a major goddess in my personal pantheon.
