I’m reminded of the criticism Anna Gunn got for playing Skyler White. Gunn gave an excellent performance...but Skyler was ultimately not a likable character, and people took their dislike of Skyler out on Gunn personally.

I suspect it’s performative on the part of the Academy.  Once the furor blows over and the vanishingly small number of people who truly care about this move on to their next shiny object, the Academy will quietly lift the ban.
