The shuttle program as a whole didn’t end up being timely or cost effective. All 3 main engines of the Shuttle has to be pulled and overhauled after every flight.

They deployed parachutes and so on, NASA had a fleet of special boats that would retrieve them at which time they would be studied and refitted.
