Thank you for this. I can’t believe I have to explain to people that the car was the start of the retro design cues. People keep thinking it has to be a modern version like the S197.

That literally has nothing to do with ANYTHING I said. I don’t give a shit about sales. The Mustang also won out because it was much softer, cheaper, and had more “retro” design cues. As opposed to the Camaro looking closer to the Japanese sports coupes of the time. Drive both sometime for me champ. Maybe after you

That’s cool. I don’t care. The point wasn’t about the 4th gen Camaro.

Now playing

If you read ANY of the reviews at that time. Especially comparisons with the Camaro. A ton of it references the retro design cues in it. It’s not exactly like a retro ripoff like the S197 was. But it was the return of the quarter panel scoops, 3-section taillights, the dash design, etc etc.

Except it didn’t really fail....

The SN95 back in 1994 actually started the “retro features” trend. It wasn’t the S197 at all. It’s part of why so many people bought the Mustang over the 4th gen Camaro. Because the 4th Gen camaro looked more like an import over the “retro” Mustang.

I’ve driven several wranglers, champ. I read and understood the article just fine.

Good because that thing is absolutely hideous and probably a POS to drive.

They do make DOT 5. And it’s expensive and not necessarily better.

No. I’m listening. You’re missing the point entirely. It’s not just retooling. It’s also rarely “ever vehicle.” There was no need for major retooling between the L32 and L33 Altima. And it’s been the case with several cars. but the issue has nothing to do with retooling. It’s research and development.

It still has an intermediate shaft you daft fuck. What it’s driven by isn’t the point regardless.

You just don’t get it, do you? To develop this vehicle would cost hundreds of millions of dollars. As opposed to just a few million to retool and certify a new model based on existing architecture.

If it’s really 650hp? Then it’s actually somewhat unlikely. The Turbo is already a pretty difficult to drive car on it’s own. Tossing a ton of power in it without the right chassis mods would make it a bit harder.
Worst part is... it was likely babied which is probably one of the worst things for a Porsche.

It’s actually not a totally different design. Sorry champ. The failure point is the bearing. Which is the difference between them.

It’s a 911 turbo. Not a Boxster/Cayman.

I’ve flipped one and driven around 5 of them. 2 of which were heavily modified. They’re all junk IMO. A good engine doesn’t make up for a terrible chassis and backing it with a garbage 4-speed auto.

Because a prototype software failing during a live event is indicative of the actual product. Sure man.

Ferraris aren’t good looking. Sorry. The F40 is a machine built for a purpose. It’s functional. not good looking.

People do manual swaps into Panthers all the time. Last I checked they offered kits.

It was about as boring to drive as all the other panthers. Sure. It had a cool engine and it was a little faster. Not enough to really get people to rush out and buy a grand marquis. Jalopnik likes to romanticize them more than the people who actually did buy them.
