But nearly every Link is a completely new character, correct? I mean, there's fan theories about reincarnation, but nothing canon, IIRC. So color me confused by your argument - assuming this was a new Link and that it was a girl, how would that take his identity away?

I don't know that I'd personally consider myself "stoked", but a switch up of (let's face it) that magnitude, would be fresh. I could personally get behind a female Link. It would be a nice twist...especially if there was NO person to be rescued. Just her, being a badass, saving a kingdom.
