from the prize creator: “That doesn’t mean we’re just looking for thrillers that feature men in jeopardy.

They could stalk men. Or be stalked by a wild animal. Or some shadowy organization. Or a woman could be stalked by another woman with no sexual overtones to it. There are a lot of options outside “woman is stalked by creepy dude with clear sexual motivation.”

I would so watch that.

So have the violence directed at a man!

Yeah, most thrillers are based on the threat of bodily harm or psychological harm. I think you could easily do this without sexual violence, but without any kind of violence at all or stalking? I don’t know, but it will be interesting to see what people come up with.

I guess the men could still be stalked?

Yep. Even amongst the guilty like GoT, look how quickly they managed to drop a lot of the worst cases that “were needed for the plot” as soon as enough noise and actions hit their bottom line.

CSI: ASPCA

I don’t watch a lot of thrillers usually, but I think this is awesome. I’ve noticed that violence to women seems to have really hit an all-time high in many areas. Especially porn. I’ve noticed there’s a lot more extremely violent porn available compared to say just 5 years ago. It’s disheartening.

Look, people, if Bryan Fuller could do Hannibal with no rape scenes, you can too.

Could a thriller be created without bodily harm? Or perhaps the question should be “could a thriller be created without *the threat of* bodily harm?” It’s a genuine literary question, and I’d be curious how it is answered.

Only friends are likewise marginalised? There are plenty of ways in which I’m marginalised as a black woman, but I didn’t think that made me a consolation friend. Wtf?

But she wasn’t presented as an unhappy person. She simply wasn’t coupled up at the time, which is a state we all find ourselves in at some point, and not always unhappily. There was no comment made about her last relationship; she clearly wasn’t some pining virgin. Masturbation need not be seen as something only sad,

His other books never got under my skin in quite the same way, but I should reread them as a 32-year old and see how I feel about them now.

I...didn’t get that message from it.

Did you also enjoy My Darling, My Hamburger?

One of my all time faves, and totally unsung. I feel it’s unfairly left out of conversations on great 80's movies, great sci fi movies, etc. Karen Allen is so awesome and beautiful in it.

Right? Those paperback covers were also the best of 1970s graphic design.

I saw an early release of it (which holy shit — I have never been in a test audience and that is sooooo cool!) and I was so moved! I also like how del Toro picks a color to be the cinematic theme of the story. The green hues were so beautiful. Cinematically, this film is a love letter for your eyes

I’ll just say I saw this movie yesterday and cried like a baby and everyone should see it. It’s beautiful and strange and satisfying and not your typical Oscar bait yawn fest.

Also, the heroes are a woman with a disability, a black woman, and a gay man and the villain is basically a stand-in for toxic white
