And the fact that each student must purchase them rather than having the school purchase them is ridiculous. If I don't need to purchase the textbook, why do I need to buy a TI for 2 classes, Algebra 2 and Pre-Calc? Plus they are never used in college.

Parents have to pay for everything. The worst used to be when I was in junior high and each teacher required very specific supplies for each subject. That's eight subjects with their own very specific binders, folders, pens, pencils, etc. My parents' bill for school supplies was like $300+ per year for those three

Thanks—it was bullshit for a lot of years, but things are good now.

The PE clothes were shorts, tees, sweatpants, and sweatshirts, that had to be purchased from the school. Your grade would get docked if you weren't wearing "compliant" PE clothes.

You have to wonder where these kinds of teachers even come from and how they ended up so insensitive.

I have never heard of public schools charging money for summer school—or for anything academic. In some states, I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be allowed. (I'm talking about the fee, not accepting the ring as collateral.)

Yeah, and where I grew up, pay for summer school teachers as well as other costs, were budgeted in to the annual budget. It's a year-long budget, not a 183 day budget.

Just curious, but where do you get your fabric from? Nice fabric is soooo expensive, I'm really limited where I live (the closest Joann's is an hour bus ride), so do you have any nice websites you order from?

I love reading Miss Manners on the subject. "Should I tell my friend she's fat?" "Why? Do you think she hasn't noticed?" If you see something wrong with someone's appearance, the rule is that you can mention it only if the person can immediately fix the problem. Since no one is going to step into another room and

Thanks! I never know either. I read it originally for a class, so I didn't have a choice in the matter. Those Russians, man. They're tricky!

recently did the prydain series again on audiobook as read by a welsh actor. Still good

I picked up Middlemarch a few years ago and loved it so much I couldn't wait to finish reading it so I could read it again.

Not yet, because I'm so far behind in my reading! But she's def on the list if only to make To Say Nothing Of The Dog even more amazing on my next re read!

Shirley Jackson, all her stuff. The Haunting of Hill House is a shudder captured on the page.

It's definitely one of those series that I would have trouble having a conversation about because I memorize what the names look like without actually figuring them out phonetically. I actually do that a lot, and it makes things awkward because I come across like I didn't actually read the book.

Maybe you need to take the work out of it and start off with some fun, goofy stuff that doesn't feel too daunting? My all time favorite book is one called "Lamb the Gospel According to Biff Christ's Childhood Friend" by Christopher Moore. Brilliantly funny, irreverant, and blasphemous. This reignited my reading a

This just reminds me of the Louis C.K. bit about how the most dangerous thing in the world for women is... guess what. Men.
