He’s not wrong at all, but he’s so damned paternalistic and wrong-headed that the whole article fills me with rage.

This exactly! There is a real problem with how irrelevant class signifiers can become part of the gate keeping that keeps people out of jobs / opportunities etc. Back when I worked for universities we talked a lot about soft skills and social capital and how to equip first-in-family students for both uni and the…
Children aren’t their parents’ possessions - they are actual people with rights.
But children aren’t their parents’ possessions that they can do whatever they want with - they are actual living human beings with rights.
So, this case has actually been going through the courts for a very long time.
Aw, she sounds lovely. The cat rescue I got my cat from were really similar - told me flat out that she hated other cats, and had her fostered out to a place where she could live on her own until she was adopted.
She’s actually fine with the other dogs in our family (big and small) because she’s not aggressive per se, just overly enthusiastic in her excitement / playing. As long term dog people our family is happy to let them sort it out between them, and once she knows them she is much more chill.
I have no idea about the whole situation above, but adopting a dog, especially an older dog can be a lot of work. My sister adopted a beautiful German Shepard who she loves and who is (now) very well trained and comfortable. However, she was locked up without any companionship for her first couple years of live and…
So, slightly off topic, but I just got back from a trip to the States, and we went to NASA and the Smithsonian. I’ve got to say the strangest part about the whole thing was the conspicuous lack of ANY mention of Nazis and the war in the frequent (and glowing) biographies of von Braun and the early space program.
Well, yeah, but I just turned 30, so we’re talking about my 20s here. If it were just my grandparents or my aunts and uncles who are in their 50s and 60s telling me that “all sorts of people are meeting their spouses online these days” that would be one thing, but you wouldn’t believe how many of my friends and even…
I believe that they are happy that I’m happy - my friends and family are lovely people who want the best for me.
They don’t attend Whitehall, and they’ve already said that they’re not about to start.
My sister watched that movie every week for a while, and I have never gotten over the fact that they just, like, decided to literally name the dude Duke. To fit with the Shakespeare. I don’t know why but that’s always cracked me up.
And we’ve already found a way to blame some women for an adult man’s actions. Fantastic.
I didn’t think you were. I think we’re just both being very cautious because it’s a sensitive issue.
Oh, certainly!
Great comment!
Yeah, no. This is essentially me. I have been banned from movie nights with historic movies because of the rage... the rage!!!
You really, really would. I’m just WAY past the point of trusting Hollywood to do even the most basic of historical research.
But the timelines made no sense in that movie. Didn’t they mention the pope as the central church authority at one point? In the 5th century??? I just... if you want to do a history story maybe read a basic textbook first?
