While I generally agree with you,* I do think there are certain phrases that are so clearly tied to a particular era that it is distracting to use them in non-modern stories. “Translating” words like ‘sexy’ or ‘okay’ is one thing, but surely it would feel anachronistic for someone in armor to suddenly bust out “yo, tha

You mean your personal POV in which you tell other people what do to?

I mostly agree, but I did think it was interesting that Judd and his wife turned out to have intentionally befriended the Abars as part of a long-term plan.

Yeah, along those lines, I’m not sure how wise it is to pick the Uncas/Cora romance as the focus of the show.

How are you with subtitles? Netflix has a few KDramas that might scratch the itch - My Country has great production values, complicated political machinations and great fight scenes (and is a complete one season). If you’re not into subtitles and don’t mind older shows, have you seen Turn? It’s the “Washington’s

Definitely!!! Reading those books resulted in (among other things) an extended disagreement with my mother about how to pronounce the word “cordial.”

Would also have been acceptable if they’d moved her ...to first class.

Eh, I’ll agree they probably wanted a ‘guy in the chair’ in terms of filling a character slot on the team, but everyone (including the writers) sometimes seems to forget that Ollie is actually pretty smart - he can manage quite a bit of tech himself, and if he can’t he finds a way around it.

FWIW, I didn’t watch the last season at all, and I don’t feel like I missed much.  You should be fine just reading a season summary then diving right in with this season.

Goose tends to be a bit more common in Eastern European food, so those kinds of restaurants/markets might be a place to start looking.

As someone who has eaten in many I-95 Rest Stop and Airport Sbarros, its not the pizza, its the pasta. Obviously it wouldn’t be my first choice for a normal meal, but when you’ve been traveling for 6 hours and your only other choice is McDs or Cinnabon, a heaping plate of basic noodles and sauce is kinda comforting.

...so you prefer the ‘hit-man’ model where we teach children to pay someone else to raise and kill their food?

While I totally accept that there is a difference between raising an animal for food vs. a pet, I don’t think it does any harm to remind people that meat comes from somewhere. I know we have many in the comments here talking about growing up with farm animals, but that is not the experience of the majority of people

That format is still hanging on in the UK - Endeavour comes to mind - but it seems to be fading even there. Regardless of actual length/# of episodes, I do generally wish that tv shows were more intentional with their seasons: if you only have 2 seasons’ worth of story, only make two seasons; if you only have 10

Am I the only one that keeps seeing Serenity (from Firefly) whenever I glance at the av club main page and see this header picture as a thumbnail?

Don’t we blame bars for selling to irresponsible consumers?  I thought bars could get in serious trouble for serving someone who is clearly blotto.

Honestly curious - where/how would you draw the line? Would you eliminate taxes on cigarettes? And if not, how do you define the distinction?

But I thought the whole point of stopping at a McDonald’s on an interstate was to use the restroom during a long drive...

My mom traveled around Italy in the late ‘60s, and as she was going town-to-town she remembered noticing a distinct inverse correlation between the feral cat populations and the amount of ground meat for sale...

Yep, season 11 should be a fairly easy starting point and is the start of a good run of seasons. I would recommend finding a season 10 recap to skim through - depending on when you left the show there are some characters / ideas you might not be familiar with that pop up here and there - but you should be able to
