I don’t think his primary motivation is money. He walked away from a solid 20 million dollar per movie deal with Marvel. Based on interviews I’ve seen he’s in that “rich as hell and doing their own thing creatively” stage that successful actors do when things get boring (think Daniel Radcliffe playing a farting corpse)
To be fair, I wouldn’t consider Tolkien to be anti-women for his time (especially since his 3 primary female characters are all powerful in their own right). However Lovecraft’s racism is something unique even to his time period.
