I think you’re missing one very key point: The “heroic rebels” of A New Hope, for the most part, don’t begin the series in The Rebellion. Luke and Obi-Wan are chilling in the desert. Han and Chewie are smugglers. Leia’s a senator, so she certainly can’t get involved in the nitty gritty.
