Getting the air inlet up above the dust is kind of a big deal.. granted the water fording ability it gives you is great, but blasting down a back road kicking up dust and following someone else id rather make it mildly easier on the engine to breathe by having the air just a touch cleaner.

Snorkels are popular in Australia primarily for the dust aspect. It is a really big problem when you have more than one vehicle on a dirt road running at a decent clip.
