I too was heavily recruited in high school, but had no pressure from the family. As good of an experience as it was, I don’t believe my dad ever really wanted to join. Ultimately, we were one of those families that did not survive the pressure.

By and large the roads themselves had plenty of grip, just a lot of bad patches to make mistakes on. Chances are the jeeps had plenty of grip, it's just the recovery equipment that made all the difference.
