Personally, I fail to see any reason to purchase something like this. If I was going to purchase one for someone, regardless of age, it would be a 3DS, simply because it is more ergonomically appealing and is the real deal, not a revised model missing features.

I just don't see the point behind it. If Nintendo is indeed marketing it as an entry-level gadget, it can go two ways:
