It is actually a very simple device with no storage. It is recognized as a keyboard by windows and simply inserts a string into the field when required. I do not see a way for it to obtain a virus.
I have a Yubikey and use it for this as well as any other accounts I can. I only wish my bank, health insurance and every other major account would support it. Thanks to articles like this, though, maybe it will!
