Also, “repressed bean bag chairs in khakis” is hilarious.

Part of me wants to be sympathetic and think just imagine the repressed household/community this guy must’ve grown up in, how he’d probably ostracized from his entire social network if he came out, etc. I understand the dynamics that prompt people to live on the DL. “Move to a big city and live your fabulous dream” is

As I understand it the trafficking charge comes from him picking the kid up to go to the hotel. That’s a pretty far stretch from the “smuggled under cover of night to be sold into prostitution” sense the term’s usually used in. The 17 year old is over the age of consent, and appeared to actually consent, so while this

I don’t see him anymore since I ditched cable/DVR and I don’t stay up late enough to watch him because I’m old, but I really admired the satire he did as “Colbert.” And oh my God that White House Correspondent’s Dinner speech was like air to me (lagniappe: Richard Cohen’s huffy “that wasn’t funny” WaPo column

I remember all the free food from McDonald’s.

What’s your take on Franken as far as evaluating/next steps? (I’m in the needs-to-resign camp, though I was originally in the don’t-run-for-reelection camp.)

Agreed. FWIW I’ve enjoyed your comments in the thread.

And anyway, I expect any “weaponization” from the right would be in the form of a ratfucking operation: recruit a plausibly liberal woman to launch a false accusation against a Republican who has as-yet-unpublicized harassment/assaults. Story gets exposed as false by conservative media, GOPer is inoculated against

This gets into unknowable thought experiments, but maybe try to think about any proposed legislation being considered where that vote would be deciding. In this case (Pence breaking 50-50 tie), what’s being discussed now where Franken’s vote would be the 51st “no”?

You’re nicer than me. I think he’s either lying or he’s done it so often it doesn’t even register with him.

God damn I hope we aren’t in for another round of “it’s a hit job from the right hey didn’t she used to be a Hooters waitress anyway?”

And he can’t remember this one either.

in this environment, I don’t want to give an inch.

They make me angry more than revulsed. Some of them are just wtf though, like that Toure excerpt. Even assuming the woman consented to it, I can’t imagine hanging out with one of my friends, popping off to have sex and then going back and being like “OK your turn.” ???

So sorry for that.

I think it’s fair to say there should be career-limiting consequences to it. In the current environment, he should take one for the team and resign. From a purely political perspective that means a D appoints his replacement and Roy Moore supporters are completely jammed.

I think your point is something that gets missed to often. I believe it was DeGaulle who said “the graveyards are filled with indispensible men.” Louis CK is a great comedian, but he’s not the only one. Franken’s politics are great, but he’s not the only one. And how many people have these indispensible men
