the "detective's curse" I think played a role in the finale as well when Rust in the hospital mentions that they had actually seen the killer beforehand at Pelican Island.
Definitely would have liked it better and it would have been clearer to me if they played some sort of flashback sound effect.
I felt like a lot of McConaughey's lines in this show have walked that tight rope and could have sounded ridiculously cheesy, but I think he's managed to pull it off well.
