That’s kind of my read on it too. He was probably seated on the far side and the door he exited from on the nearside was closed so he just thought to run around back to the other door like you would with a car and completely misread the dangers in the moment.  It was a tragic lapse in judgement is what it sounds like

The thing is - he ran into a moving tail rotor. It doesn’t matter why, it doesn’t matter how cautious and wary a person he was. He walked into his own demise. It’s a tragic incident and I don’t blame people for looking for...something. blame, anger, etc.
