It’s missing from this article that Mayor Wheeler also serves as the City of Portland’s police commissioner. Portland police’s tactics before, during, and independent from the federal occupation been overly aggressive; it took a class-action lawsuit to even _begin_ to slow the PPB down.
Just think, the American government has federal officers beating and tear gassing people American Citizens protesting against police brutality and racial injustice. The federal officers and police seem happy to do it.
It’s worth pointing out that Ted Wheeler, because of the structure of the city government, has oversight of the Portland bureau of Police. So, in order to establish “respect” for the police, federal forces literally attacked the Police Commissioner.
