I think the other reason a lot of us are playing it anyway is because we’re not necessarily expecting a patch. Sure it seems like a foregone conclusion, given the janky release, but historically, patches for Pokemon games have largely only fixed cheating exploits and literal game-breaking bugs, not graphical foibles…

The game isn’t nearly as bad as this article makes it sound. Yes it’s slow, yes there’s pop-in, but it’s not game-breaking. People are entitled to a refund if they’re unhappy but anyone expecting “AAA tier” from a Pokemon game is deluded. Yes, both things can be true.
