The American palate skews sweet when it comes to mixed drinks. Bitter is an acquired taste. Even though I've always loved grapefruit (both fresh and juice), it took me a while to get into bitter alcoholic beverages. Now they are my favorites.

Fernet & Coke is surprisingly good. I thought Argentinians were nuts until a bartender talked me into trying it. I had tried fernet straight before and was expecting the worst, but instead was quickly won over.
