Yep. In Germany, you can’t walk three blocks without tripping over a holocaust memorial. And they didn’t turn their concentration camps into “nostalgic,” “charming,” “historical” places to host weddings, like we did with plantations.

Merkel is NOT a liberal, in the American sense. She’s a center-right politician, just like Hillary. They’re both European liberals, meaning pro-free market and pro-democracy.

I don’t agree, politically, with Merkel on a large slab of issues (I’m not German, but have a half-German family and am in the EU, so I know them pretty well), but we’re in new world now where “Will stand against fascism” is apparently a rare and precious commodity in a world leader.

Means of all the major world powers that sent millions to fight and die to stop Germany’s fascist regime, who’s left now that wouldn’t officially applaud Hitler’s rhetoric?

The Germans, effectively, don’t have a military. They absolutely don’t have the power to project what armed forces they do have onto any part of the planet outside Europe. Their only power is having the strongest economy in Europe, and that is greatly dependent on a functioning EU and a benevolent USA.

What is considered “conservative” in Germany is considered more to the left in America. For conservatives in Germany universal health care is a sound idea. Not so here.

Americans forget the hell hole that was Communism in Europe, especially in East Germany because they weren’t neighbors to it. But having lived through it, I bet Merkel is in the concrete mindset of “Never again.”

Germany is pretty much the only country that doesn’t whitewash its history, and makes damn sure children are raised learning everything about its past mistakes so they won’t make them again. Virtually no other country does that.

She’s from East Germany. She knows what happens when this shit goes wrong. Do we all need to be reminded with some empirical evidence? Because that is where we’re heading.
