Could there not be a thought from some politicians that sports teams have symbolic value in cities that are known primarily for bad news stories about urban blight? Not that I would say this is particularly sensible, but it's something that presumably wouldn't be a consideration in a place like San Diego.

The lack of infrastructure investment in the US in general is bizarre. The first time I visited was in the 90's, and it's weird to see how little things have changed in comparison to here (I'm British). I assume that at some point there will be a kind of communal burst of good sense but it seems to be taking a while.

I dunno. I once looked at renting a flat in Dalston, but I couldn't afford it.

Bottom 10% in all the usual statistical measures of dame effectiveness.

Because language should provide clarity. 'The female actor, Blake Lively' is much more cumbersome than 'the actress, Blake Lively'.

I don't agree. Particularly given how mystifying showbiz names often are, and with what seems like a general trend toward more unisex names, it's useful for differentiating.

Those Hellfire Clubs were insane. I think it was at a meeting of one of them where someone shot the waiter and had him added to the bill.

Rope-a-dope.

Ha! High scores made against England don't count. They're like wind assisted long jumps.

Though I sincerely liked Kula Shaker at the time, I think among the real cool kids they were always thought of as kind of a joke. These last few years they have made something of a comeback as the nickname of the moderate Sri Lankan bowler Nuwan Kulasekara.

There was a rugby player whose name was pronounced that way. I was baffled by it as a child.

A new Lowe.

Gina G?

Exactly. Although I suppose the danger is that with each choice you piss off a chunk of your audience.
