I’m thinking what we have is a couple of short pieces of square tube welded to the main hoop above the road with flanges welded to those short pieces. Then the sign bolts onto those flanges. The tubes are necessary to give clearance below the flanges for putting nuts on the bolts.

I’m more concerned about how the footing plates pulled away for the box section it was bolted to. Were those plates welded to the box section? Because the fasteners look intact.

The sign and the gantry it’s mounted on are less than a year old, as that section of freeway has recently been widened. The news report was saying the authorities did not know why it failed, but it was immediately obvious to anyone watching the news footage that the small struts with the square mounting plate you can
