Dear Jalopnik,
Dear Jalopnik,
magazines are still printed? I haven’t seen one in years.. i need to get out more.
You’re looking at two different California standards. The 50ft one is 80dB and a car driving by, and is the standard OEMs (and dealers) have to meet to sell a car here. The SAE J1169 (May 1998) is 95dB stationary, steady state, 20" from the tailpipe at 45 degrees off center. From what I have been able to gather it was…
I think there is an easier way to determine is it should be an offense or not that would still accomplish your goal.
“Pleasant” is an arbitrary measure. I can’t blare classical music at 95+ decibels and claim it’s totally fine because “everyone” finds Beethoven pleasant.
Just an anecdote, our local autocross requires us to read below 96dB so as not to piss off the neighbors.
I do hate loud exhausts (and head lights that are way too bright), but this can’t be a discretionary, judgement-call kind of thing. Even with measuring tools, location can wildly change dB at X number of feet away. So, unless they can come up with a fair and repeatable test (and make one for headlights, too), I’m not…
Let’s all be honest here. This is going to be for people “gunning it” at red lights, revving in areas it’s unnecessary, and for legitimate nuisance level straight pipes. Well, that and profiling.
The civic type r is what happens when twentysomething dude bros who take the bus design a car.
Nope. Still ugly.
I’m glad it’s rare to see them on the road around here. The CTR is one ugly, UGLY car. Its performance doesn’t make it easier on the eyes.
This is so clear a BMW Z with a Toyota clip on it that I can’t even call it a Supra with a straight face.
Good catch! This should be higher in the thread
Yeah, I would think they’d be more advanced than to use acoustic wear indicators.
And all this sounds awesome.........until 2-3 years from now lolz
When I saw the lede, I immediately thought of how prohibitively heavy Teslas are. I assume that will accelerate pad wear. Wasn’t really thinking about regenerative “braking,” though. Can anybody speak to whether you can tell the difference between rotor/pad braking and regenerative braking? Also, without knowing the…
Never? Literally never? Never ever? Okay then.
Oh don’t be so pessimistic, that will happen on lap two in limp mode. More like
Did Chevy say that, or did an employee at a dealership say it?
