First off, the gas level warning light and the needle are not controlled by the same sensor. Look at a sender unit, and there will be a float, which controls the needle, and a second sensor which extends down into the tank and lights up the warning light when the liquid level falls and exposes the end of the sensor.

Knocking might cause the animal to hunker down and hide, like the chipmunk that runs up rain spouts (and maybe exhaust pipes) to hide.
