The ending 'twist' to the first Cars movie is a stroke of pure Pixar genius. The film is just a bit to generic on the journey to the end to rank alongside their better works but it still has a deep emotional and moral climax.

I may be mistaken but from the tone of @Pastyjournalist:disqus's comment it sounded like his/her boyfriend was refusing to ever watch this film because it looks too depressing. That suggests a general lack of interest in experiencing anything that may not be all rainbows and explosions.
