Good to see that, incidentally. I strongly suspect the en banc court is going to toss that ruling out with the trash, since that’s what it is.
I mean, it’s a slippery slope from changing mascots to total genocide of white people, and if we can’t pour some sticky syrup on that slope then it’s curtains for everything we hold dear and the terrorists win. Or something.
lol I’m dying here
Yes - and was also part of the impetus behind the Mexican-American war that resulted in the annexation of California and the Southwest (though ironically, Congress passed the Wilmot Proviso blocking any of that territory from being a slave state).
The irony is that it was the Southerners that were the most interested in annexing parts of Mexico, because they wanted territory to make new slave states out of.
Yeah, seriously. Trying to tie the rest of southern culture to this racist BS just taints it. Why not just celebrate the good things, and leave the bad/evil/racist/etc shit in the past?
Joke’s on him now - the government might just be able to seize the profits from his book since he didn’t formally complete the review process. (Not that Trump’s cronies were ever going to not game that to try and delay anything bad about their super thin-skinned boss coming out, but..)
We definitely should not blindly lionize or engage in hagiography about historical figures. Everyone has flaws and failings, but in understanding those, not only can it teach lessons about where even so-called great men and women stumbled, but we can compare those who overcame their flaws to do great things, with…
Sadly, just because someone is able to love a person as an individual, doesn’t mean they aren’t racist when it comes to the greater whole.
Hey now, there’s some good things on the earth worth preserving.
On one hand I was surprised to learn that roughly 3% of the cops in Florida have previously been fired as cops elsewhere, but on the other hand I was surprised that it was only 3%.
Any cop that’s protesting this needs to not be a cop, plain and simple. The police absolutely need to be subject to civil oversight and held accountable. That is exactly what this is about. It’s not even a protest over a verdict, it is a protest over the simple fact that he’s being charged at all. As someone who…
We did that already - part of the reforms that the new Democratic legislature and Northam pushed through. Unfortunately it only affects state employees, but it’s something. What we really need is to have it as a national holiday that’s mandatory for most businesses too.
Speaking as a Virginia resident, there’s still lots of parts of this state that are really fucked up. We’re just on the road to getting better is all.
The key thing with a world like that, is that it is a world where cops do not see the rest of the population as enemies or anything similar, or for that matter, where they do not feel pressured to do so (let alone treat people as such).
Imagine if you will, though, a world where a cop sees a broken taillight, and pulls you over to help you fix it. Not to get a chance to snoop around, but just to help you out and make your vehicle safer for you and everyone on the road. It seems like such an alien notion to how our current society runs, and that fact…
Consider that many of them probably don’t have an alternative if they want to keep their jobs.
There are two big problems with this idea.
I saw, but the point I was making was that he didn’t so much run as a progressive per se - he stated a bunch of positions, but everyone fixated on the Iraq War one. It was the key litmus test of the 2008 primary, and the biggest knock on Clinton was that she had voted yes to allow Bush to invade.
