The thrusters point “rearward”, just like any other craft, they just do it at angles off the center line - they “pull” instead of “push”.

Since Renner’s Hawkeye started in the films, it makes sense that the tone would continue into his show. I think Disney/Marvel is smart enough to bring in the Netflix heroes and keep them “on tone”.
