I guess that is likely, but I don’t think we need to worry about the EMP when a Chicxulub sized rock falls on us :)

I don’t think a meteor strike will create an EMP. But I decided to Google and there seems to be some speculation that it could generate one. In the Russian one, it’s the shock wave that caused the damage.

50 ft is the size before entry. After traveling through our atmosphere it was a bunch of much smaller pieces.

Assuming Chelyabinsk to be 50 ft across, cube of 2 is 8.

By your own standards, that comment makes you a misogynist.

You expect logical answers when candidates are faced with facts? You have much more faith in human nature than I do :)

That was fun - thanks!

We need experimental data! Think we can get DARPA funding?

If you can afford parking in Manhattan, it just means you need to cut back on eating out for a couple of days.

For comparison, the spectacular Chelyabinsk meteor, probably the most recorded thanks to Russian dashcams, is at least 50 ft in diameter. This one is up to 8 times more massive. In the 1 in 250 million chance that it hits, it won’t be an extinction event, but it’ll be a really bad day for anyone in the immediate

Google should cover him. The manufacturer or seller of the cable should be made to pay as well. I’d buy him a beer any day though.

House prices are indeed obscene here right now.

That’s not a McMansion. That’s pretty much any tract single family home built in the Bay Area in the last 20 years.

What the hell is wrong with people?

I don’t know what an average person can do to help honey bees survive, but depending on where you live, you can try to help native bee population along. They’re actually better pollinators and can help your garden crop.

The whole point of the early warning system is that the extra seconds can save lives. If you’re really interested, go read up on implementations in Japan and its effectiveness.

I’m curious about your comment about RED and a walled garden approach. I have zero experience with RED. Can you elaborate? Thanks.

So your reasoning is that a 8.0+ quake anywhere on San Andreas or Hayward Fault will so completely destroy Berkeley and kill everyone there that they have no need for whatever warning they might get?
