They are rewriting the compelling historical story of a portly trans man to be be an exploitation film about a sexy lesbian. This is trans erasure at its finest. They are misgendering a dead man without an ounce of shame.

Beyond the trans erasure (which is real) this is just a dumb casting choice. She looks NOTHING like the real-life person she’s playing, and the overlap between ScarJo fans and people who watch movies about obscure middle aged trans men can’t possibly be big enough to justify this as a business decision.
This is a bad take. There are plenty of middle-aged male actors getting work in Hollywood, and no one is going to a movie about a middle-aged trans male because they want to see an attractive young female.
I agree, so far it’s nothing but queer-baiting bullshit which provides ample cover for people who have no desire to confront their own prejudices.
These two characters aren’t queer, they’re just ‘really close friends’. This transman is just a confused lady who like pants. I am over film studios and show-runners using…
They used “Hollywood wants a big name” with Noah, Gods of Egypt, Exodus, Aloha, and all the other whitewashed movies that bombed too. Meanwhile interesting films with more diverse casts (Moonlight, Hidden Figures, Get Out) have been doing well even without “big names” attached. This tired excuse doesn’t actually align…
It’s not in a grey zone, it falls much closer to the race analogy because both are marginalized identities who have been historically shut out of Hollywood casting. That is not similar to having cancer.
Please, dismiss your trolls. It’s a community service.
I agree with your points, but you mean "role." I kept picturing a convoluted debate over who should get the last dinner roll.
If I’m reading this right, you are a trans person, who believes that “trans” is “a fantastical identity cooked up by a mental disorder”. And yet you still identify as trans? Am I missing something here?
You're just living the cliché. You forgot to call me a snowflake SWJ.
Exactly. My annoyance at this casting runs deep. Even if I could accept a female cis actor, ScarJo is a bad choice. It’s bad casting full stop.
“That and she’s a mediocre actress”.
But really, other than a pretty face, what’s there ever been to like? She’s repeatedly and remorselessly taken roles from marginalized groups, endorsed a company occupying the West Bank, defended Woody Allen, and supported Marchesa in the wake of Me Too. That last one wouldn’t bother me so much on its own, but it…
What the hell? A trans man is NOT A VERY BUTCH LESBIAN.
She’s not gonna fuck you, Mike.
“a great transgender” jfc... the problem is trans folks don’t ever get opportunities to play cis people (did you read the article)? It doesn’t work in both directions. Cis people play whoever the fuck they want and trans people can’t even audition to play trans folks. See the problem?
I seriously had to go looking up your comment history to make sure this wasn’t trolling. This isn’t a discussion about gay/straight. And are you talking about Hilary Swank in Boy’s Don’t Cry? Because if so she is not a very very butch gay woman she plays a trans man. They aren’t even the same thing and it is pretty…
First of all Swank is very talented, second she was playing a very young character and at that age it takes very little to make most people look like they belong to the opposite gender, third that movie was cast around twenty years ago and I would hope trans people got to, at least, play trans roles by now.
My main complaint about Johansen in anything is she’s a really ad actress.
Are we talking about the same Michael Rapaport whose wide range of irreplaceable talent consists of several variations of Some Guy From New York? I’m not terribly surprised he’s defending the laziness and lack of imagination involved in casting since his career absolutely depends on it.
