I’d estimate about half of my coworkers have PhDs (I’m in pharmaceuticals).  I’m constantly amazed at how slow/unintelligent some of them are.  From what I’ve seen, getting a PhD sometimes requires nothing more than stubbornness - if you hang out in some programs, they’ll give you the PhD just to get rid of you!
