Because actual death threats when posted online can be investigated by the FBI and the perpetrators tracked down, if there were actual threats. More likely he just got bored with the project, it started to become work and he wanted to back out without looking like a jerk so he made up death threats.

As a developer it’s up to you to limit access in any way you feel necessary. This person wasn't so much a developer as a person who wanted to pretend to be a developer but didn't have the cojones to stick with it when it started getting to be work.
