I would actually recommend reading the First Law trilogy first before reading the stand alones. You don’t HAVE to, but it does provide context to what is going on. There are definitely characters that it would help if you understood their backstory.

All of Joe Abercrombie’s books are absolutely stellar, but Best Served Cold is the best in my opinion. It is SO good. You should really read it. And my description is not really all that far off.

To reiterate, I believe that the act of being reborn fundamentally changed Jon in a way that is not readily apparent. Melisandre believes he is Azor Ahai reborn. If we continue with this theory then it is possible that in his rebirth, Jon gained power that he previously did not have.
