My first memory of “MacArthur Park” is of an Olympic ice skater zooming around to the instrumental passage - you know, with that great harpsichord.
Survivor: Cheesecake is not exciting me.
The songs “Powderfinger” and “The Night They Drove Ol’ Dixie Down” are two monuments to the victimized southerners you’re referring to that even die-hard liberals like me can appreciate.
Thank you. I wasn’t aware of the issue.
Dude, I miss your passion. I’m over on TI and some Disqus sites, but I’m not feeling the community there - not yet. The very structure of Kinja as a platform says, “We know you can only hold one, maybe two, ideas at a time. Just react to this one thing, OK?”
Way to go, Otura Yomosocki!
You forgot “Top of the World.”
Betcha MY comment from those years ago was deleted, too. Noel, I’ve thought about this article plenty since it came out. But to mention a one-line Petty poem from “Margarita”: “She wrote a long letter on a short piece of paper.”
The significance of the gay kiss? They never had the nerve to do it during the original run and got a lot of flack for it. I thought it was a pretty awesome reference - “We didn’t feel we could do this before, but we paved the way.”
Having only seen the first two episodes, I clicked to find out how the first season ended. Because the header told us they were going to.
We should be happy he didn’t call him “stud.”
I saw Seinfeld open for the Temptations (!) at the old Chautauqua Amphitheater in 1984. It was the year when there were two Temptations tours - one with Ruffin and Kendricks, the other with Paul Williams and the later singers (you’ll know about this if you’ve seen the mini-series). I saw the latter of these. Seinfeld…
I’ve said all along that Mueller is going to blindside Trump from a direction that’s going to catch us all by surprise. I’ve also said that Trump has been tracked since long before he was running for office. Let’s see!
So many movies that try to capture the dream world are experimental, and made on the cheap. Their effects are often transparent and that just makes them creepier. Very few can make real dreamlike emotions out of color - Lynch, and Powell and Pressburger come to mind.
I like the song - it’s a lark. The movie is much more despairing, probably because it came from after the 60s were over.
While you all are handling the artistic argument, let me introduce a businessman’s perspective. It’s called the Product Life Cycle. It is possible that big-budget actioners have passed the Maturity phase and are now in Decline:
Their entire catalogue is strong. I love Pretzel Logic the best, but if your tastes are jazzy, don’t miss Katy Lied.
I had their double-vinyl Greatest Hits when it came out - I regularly fell asleep on the couch listening to it when I should have been looking for work. That’s a compliment to them, and the memory still makes me feel like a lard-ass. But one with good taste.
Have you ever seen a squonk’s tears, well look at mine.
