A reasonable overview, but you knew I'd have to comment. ;)

Lots of great ideas below AND in the article. I worked professionally designing and implementing backup/recovery and disaster recovery solutions for companies for over a decade. DR planning and testing was my life.

Perhaps, but probably not. I wrote a realistic view, IMHO, of the device capabilities here: [blog.jdpfu.com] with what you can expect and should not expect from it.

I use different, convenient, body parts. For example,

Perhaps you are missing the point? If the codec isn't supported with hardware-based video decoding, then the playback performance will very likely be unacceptable.

Where I see these devices shining is as cheap desktops that connect to central PCs - sorta like the old JavaStations from Sun Micro as pictured. Running a lite weight Linux-based OS with X/Windows or VNC or RDP to connect to other computers on the LAN. This would be good for the kids to do homework, but not for any

I didn't say this, but "light" was the goal.

What clothing would you pack for a 2-3 week spring/fall trip overseas (moderate climates)?

Exactly. For that C/S app progress bar, the last DBMS commit was a single call that was way outside my control from the client side. Being at 95-99% and making that call could in no way provide an accurate estimate for the remaining amount of time. Storing 5 objects is very different from storing 15,000 objects.

Yes.

No. Contracts come in email. I want to be paid and to find new contracts. Email is something that all my contacts know how to use - some even know how to gpg encrypt their email.

I've written a few progress bars in commercial software over the years. Not for downloading stuff, but for showing progress of longer-than-expected processes.

I like showing up with a backup plan - any device with javascript and HTML can display S5 slides. I bring a flash drive with all my presentations loaded to meetings ... as a backup for other speakers. It also makes posting them to the web ... well, since they are HTML already, just a file copy.

Sorry, I'd assumed most people knew this ... I usually give presentations at Linux User Groups. MS-Windows is not welcome there, as you might imagine. At work, using Linux for presentations provides "nerd cred" with my peers. Priceless.

Is it possible to export presentations for those times when no network is available to speakers?

Read that vodka or vinegar could be used on a travel website. Don't know myself, but I've had my tiny bottle of hand sanitizer taken as I was leaving a country - never bothered to replace it.

I wish WINE were as easy to use as the article implies. Sure, it works for many win32 programs and works well (sometimes better/faster than native Windows), but for others that use newer Windows APIs, it can be a real challenge or may not be possible. To me, it appears most WINE development is for game support. That
