He's definitely annoying in the book, but he has likable qualities. In the show, he's just so friggin awful.

It's still a pretty good show, but man, is Quentin annoying. I don't think it's how he's written, either. The obnoxious stuttering from that perpetually somber, fish-eyed face with the Kurt Cobain haircut makes me want to punch a wall.
