Fun fact - NZ has few car regulations (pretty much anything that's right hand drive can be imported) so you can find all sorts of unusual used cars from Asia - mostly JDM models but also Indian and Malaysian brands!

That's 65k USD and includes a 15% sales tax. Not THAT far from US pricing in the end.

Keep in mind that NZ prices include a 15% sales tax so the actual price paid pre-tax is more like 56k USD

In USD that’s more like 65k and it also includes their 15% sales tax. The pre tax price is more like 56k USD which is less far fetched.

And here I thought this man was part of the “master race”... the “master race” seems to be unable to overcome minor difficulties...

devil’s advocate here: How about instead of playing Bond, Elba could play a significant character who exists in the Bond universe (and Bond could have a secondary supporting role for a change, or maybe even nothing more than a cameo)?

Also, manufacturers are likely to spread out price increases since a lot of their imported models are incredibly popular, so that $1800 estimate is probably very conservative. They aren’t going to freeze domestic prices and raise imported prices 25% - it’s going to be a 10-15% increase on every single model for sure.

Why do they even bother trying to reason with the fatass? He’s an extreme case of Dunning-Kruger and his false beliefs have been firmly rooted since at least the 1980s.

No, the Camry’s US content is closer to 70%. I think the 90% applies only to North America as a whole.

It is true though. Due to the market size and relatively low taxes, both upfront and ownership costs are lower in the US than in other developed nations. Even developing countries tend to have higher purchase prices thanks to taxation.

Everyone loses. Like others said, America’s Big Three import many cars into the US, and their US-made vehicles also use imported parts.

Due to the popularity of many imported models, any price increases will likely have to be spread out across the whole lineup regardless of location of final assembly. And layoffs will be inevitable. Retaliatory tariffs from other countries will also kill the growing export market for US-made cars.

Slapping on tariffs overnight on both parts and finished vehicles would devastate the industry and lead to massive losses and layoffs.

Remember that this guy holds grudges for years. He has a bone to pick with other world leaders, most recently Justin Trudeau, for perceived slights. He’s also a proven racist who’d love to stick it to non-whites in Asia and Latin America. His obsession with undoing everything Obama did proves this.

Demand for domestically made cars won’t rise if people lose their jobs. If an automaker decides to eat the tariff cost to avoid or minimize price hikes, then workers will be laid off. If price hikes are seen to be too high, a drop in demand for imports will affect dockworkers, transporters, dealership staff, etc...

They’re full of spineless sycophants who may privately not agree with the orange fatass, but value their power and riches more than their personal “morals” if any.

No, only about 30% of parts come from Japan. 55% come from USA. The rest comes from Canada and Mexico thanks to NAFTA.

We want a civilized negotiation that sees the relatively low 10% tariff dropped. Not name-calling and flip-flopping that makes it impossible for the other party to trust us.

The tariffs affect PARTS in addition to finished cars. The Camry uses some imported parts.

$40k gets you far more car today than $40k did 10 years ago. Yes, you could have been in a more upmarket brand for $40k 10 years ago, but the actual content would be a joke compared to what you can get now. I drive a fully loaded Ford Fusion Energi and it’s a far more luxurious car than a similarly-priced base-model
