I don’t understand the distinction. A pixel is a picture element; it need not be a physical thing like a CRT triad. So long as the image is constructed from like-sized points on a grid, they can accurately be referred to as pixels.

But what is an 8-bit game? Are we referring to sprite data? Address bus?

But what is an “8-bit Mario” image? Even Mario sprites from SNES games are only 16 colors, and fit the definition of 8-bit imagery.
