Oh yeah, this person knew nothing of the context, and explicitly admitted they’d never read the books. They really just read the one paragraph of the “Vimes Boots Theory” and thought “Yes, this is about how poor people are poor because they just don’t work hard enough.” It was such a monumentally wrongheaded take that

A friend had a similar situation where the bank didn’t think he would be able to afford a $1000 monthly mortgage, meanwhile he is paying $1250 monthly in rent.

Overdraft fees are like some sort of sick joke, and I’ve felt this for years.

The Ankh-Morpork banks aren’t interested in poor customers, they only care about the rich investors. That was a major plot point in Making Money

The city that the Vimes books are set in (Ankh Morpork) is a very ‘New York in the 80s, except with Dwarves and Trolls and the like’ .

I think what might confuse things a little was that Vimes is shown to almost like the cheap boots , as they let him feel his way around the city . Although its really more in context (he’d gotten married to an heiress , for love mind you , and felt like a class traitor for having money).

I will never forget the time that I was arguing with a Reddit rando and they invoked the Vimes Boots Theory to try and justify their argument that poor people were just lazy, really, and that they “need to voluntarily lower their standard back down so as to build up resources that will let them raise their class.”

I am the Pricing Manager at a well known grocery chain. In the last two weeks I have seen prices rise exponentially. Even the value brands have increased by 30%. Any item over $3.00 has raised by at least 75 cents. The check lane candy went from 10 for $10 to $1.50 each. Maruchan Ramen noodles 5 packs, those salty

You’ll likely be paying back more than the 100 dollars the cheap boots would have cost you. And if you can’t pay it back after paying the Thieves Guild to not steal the cash you just paid them then the lender will come by and save you money in the future by ensuring that you no longer need to buy boots anymore. Or sock

yup if you earn less you pay more, another place its clear to see is housing, my current situation pointed this out to me, i rent my house but the owner is selling it so i have to move, as rent has gone up everywhere generally an equivalent house in the same area is about 25% more than im currently paying

Those are great. Never seen them before. Thanks for posting them.

The part about banks and credit cards reminds be of another fact.

I agree. However I would suggest finding the French covers. They’re absolutely mental.

I have thought about the Vimes Boots Theory a lot - since even before it became a meme. It really is true, and if you look, you see it everywhere.

It’s expensive to be poor, they get nickled and dimed for every good/service and they’re nearly always worse quality/smaller than goods that people more well off can afford

I never did like the British covers for the Discworld books... My mental image of the characters never looks anything like the cartoonish figures from those.

It is very expensive being poor.

I just finished the documentary about the old lady serial killer who ran a boarding house similar to this one in the late 80's and the parallels are uncomfortably close.  I’m actually less surprised to see an alleged evangelical doing something so evil and then when they get busted say “I was just trying to help like

“Doing what god commanded”?

Can’t say I’m on board with this gritty remake of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
