To the guy apparently mistakenly thinking I was intending to make a point about “blacks” or specifically about black comedians/entertainers, let me clarify. This is not unique to black comedians/entertainers. This is a comedian/entertainer thing - regardless of race. That’s why Chappelle described the white

There’s only one rule if you’re a comedian making fun of someone or a group of people: punch up. Want to make fun of Mango Voldemort and his family of grifters? Go for it. Want to make fun of homeless people? You, sir, are distasteful and need to go spend some time with the homeless to see how often someone is one

In the end, he was free to say what he wanted.  He even got paid for it.  And then he was able to say it to millions of people all over the world.  The fact that his special exists is proof that he’s wrong.

If your “comedy” involves punching down at marginalized people who face murder and suicide at a much higher rate than the general population then you’re not doing comedy, you’re spewing hate speech.

“I can’t speak about the content of the show but what I say is, there is a bigger conversation we need to have.”

“You’re not free to say what you want” says man saying what he wants on television.

Biggie has the benefit of being dead several decades.

They all also had a healthy understanding of what their job was and the resulting responsibilities that came with it. None of ‘em were perfect by modern standards, but they were all intelligent and conscientious about not only what they could say, but what they should say, what they shouldn’t say, and why that was.

Being transphobic isn’t even *unpopular*. Lots of people happy to cape for Dave cos they want to say that mean shit, too. And that’s the crux. he’s not really saying a super “out there” opinion. The reams of anti-trans activism in America and the UK spell that out sadly too clearly.

Richard Pryor, Sam Kinnison, and George Carlin all were immensely funny and popular. They also broke the “PC” barriers on a nightly basis. Without being offensive to any specific race, religion, or sexual orientation.

With the matter of degrading lyrics, those lyrics are a well-documented misogynistic source that many of us do, indeed, feel should be "cancelled."  Thing is, if the artists in question don't want to be "cancelled," they DO have the option to, you know, NOT USE those lyrics.  I have zero sympathy for the vast majority

He is worse than trash. This bastard sat on The View and co-signed with Don Imus about college athletes being “Nappy headed hos” while that dumb bitch Whoopi Goldberg sat there in silence.

With all of this talk, I wonder if Dave’s defenders and the antagonists for “cancel culture against the rich and famous” are willing to forgive Roseanne Barr, or perhaps, Chrisette Michele?

‘You’re no longer free in this country. You’re not free to say what you want, you say what we want you to say. Otherwise we will cancel you.’ That’s the discussion we should have.

Damon Waynans can take his all his money and privilege and go fuck himself right along with Dave. It kills me how some Black folks get some material wealth then start acting just like bigoted rich White people.

I think of fluffy (Gabriel Iglesias) as a good example of comedy. When he does insult anyone it's often himself.

Why on earth do you admire Damon Wayans? He has went out of his way to show you that he is utterly horrible as a human being. He defended Bill Cosby, trashed his victims, his horrible treatment years ago of Doris Roberts on the emmy’s. He’s a dirt bag

I feel like this gets conflated a lot. You ARE free to say what you want in this country. There may, however, be CONSEQUENCES to saying whatever you want. Some of those consequences may be that a bunch of people who feel hurt or aggrieved or who feel a power imbalance is at work may speak up, singly or collectively,

People who conflate funny with edgy/offensive are exhausting.

The “cancel culture” is just today’s “Political correctness”. It’s people who want to say offensive things without backlash.
