We still have a Claire’s among the six stores still open in our mall.  My kid said something about getting her ears pierced there and I said nope we’re going to a piercing shop.  There are much better options now than we had in the dark times of the early 90s.

They were around until at least the late 2000s; I remember begging my mom to drive me to the mall before I could drive myself to get books the day they dropped there. God, I was so cool. 

I did the same and nearly broke down into tears. Hell, I remember the giant hanging ball clocks that were suspended between the floors. Also, MANY a slice at Sbarro’s so I feel you, fam.

Im 33 and def remember Walden Books. 

There was also Crown Books (“If you paid full price, you didn’t buy it at Crown...”), whose president had the most amazing hair:

I worked at a Musicland (same company as Sam Goody) in a mall in Indiana from the mid-80s to the early 90s, and every second of this trailer gave me chills, in the way revisiting one’s Hoosier past is often chilling. YIKES.

I had one until around 2007 or 08. Still remember the last thing I bought there, it was an order for one of the Y: The Last Man trades. Then it closed and the only reason I have to go to the mall ever since is the movie theater.

I worked at a Waldenbooks.

I swear the first thing that went through my head was “Dammit- no one will go into town anymore, so Joyce will lose her job and then the arcade will close by next year.” Forget the upside down- the systematic destruction of local businesses in the 80's and 90's was far more effective in destroying towns. 

This. I was going to comment. As a book addict in the late 70' & 80's, I spent a lot of time and money at Waldenbooks. Got yelled at by my dad for putting too many books on HIS credit card. Getting cut off from that credit card was hard. Then I discovered the library and all was right with the world.

The answer is it doesn’t matter. Trump has full control of all three branches of government and can (and will, and does) do whatever he pleases. Our system of checks and balances is entirely non-functional. We are living in an authoritarian regime that simply hasn’t shed its veneer of republican (little “r”)…
